Went to Oita River today to check for migrating ducks. Not so many
Wigeons yet, but surprisingly found a 10+ group of
Gadwall feeding along with
Mallards and
Common Teals. Other than the ducks, the number of
Great Cormorant (
Phalacrocorax carbo) was quite impressive. There were several large flocks gliding on the sky and many were scattering all over the river. Most of them were adults in non-breeding plumage and immatures, with only one breeding adult seen. Some were quite tame enough to be able to get as close as a 300mm needs. Seems like they're gathering only for winter, since I've never seen them in large flocks like this before.
