Japanese Marten

It's my birthday today and I went to Beppu Ropeway again since early morning. I walked up hill along my favourite track and spotted this guy hopping around in the middle of the road while I was sitting and waiting for my sweat to dry up. At first, I thought it was a weasel which I normally see, but its short tail and body made me think that it's definitely not a weasel. I finally found out that it's a Japanese Marten (Martes melampus) or テン(ten) in Japanese. It also didn't crawl like weasel, but rather hopped forward. The face is quite blackish and the body is yellowish-brown because it's in a summer coat.

Happy birthday for yesterday and congrats on the marten. They have been in the news here in Niigata for killing a number of Toki on Sado. I'd be excited to see one though. It does seem to have longer legs than the weasel I saw in winter.

Happy Birthday, I occasionally see this (or a very similar) animal running in front of the car on mountain roads.......

Happy birthday and good job to take photos of Marten.
Marten is one of the most my favorite mammal in Japanese.
It has very wariness, so it's very difficult to take photo.

Thanks a lot martesorex!
Yes it was very wary but maybe I was sitting very still at first so it didn't notice me...
